Recent news stories suggests that, despite safety and terrorism concerns, work on a deadly avian flu virus that has been bio engineered in two laboratories, will be released to the public. In a NYT article written by Denise Grady (1), it is stated that “The full details of recent experiments that made a deadly flu virus more contagious will be published, probably within a few months.” In articles discussing the bio ethics of releasing such information that could fall into the hands of “terrorists”, it has been stated that the United States of America has taken the lead in trying to stifle this information.

The new, more contagious avian flu virus (H5N1) was engineered by two separate scientists in two separate laboratories. A Dutch virologist, Ron Fouchier, developed his version of the deadly virus at Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam. A second scientist, Yoshihiro Kawaoka of the Universities of Wisconsin and Tokyo is said to have done similar work with similar results. Both have been rather blatant about the seeming ease with which this virus was engineered to become deadly to the human race.

The avian flu found in nature is only contagious to humans that have had direct contact with the infected birds. The reason for this is that the avian flu virus has smaller protein “spikes” that cause the immune response against the virus (2). These “spikes” are glycoproteins that line the lipid membrane of the virus. They are known as HA (Hemagglutinin) and NA (Neurominidase) and they determine the subtype of the influenza virus (H5N1 for example). The longer these “spikes” in the virus, the more contagious they are. There is little doubt to those that understand these viruses that elongating these spikes played a part in the bioengineering of the more virulent strain of the H5N1.

The problem that I seem to have with the United States government worrying about how dangerous this information could be and questioning why this work was performed in unprotected university labs as opposed to military installations is that this work was financed by the United States Government! In the United Kingdom’s Independent Newspaper, reporter Steve Conner reported (3); “A senior source close to the bio security board, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Independent that the National Institutes of Health, which funded the work, (emphasis added) is about to make a decision on how much of the scientific paper on the H5N1 super strain should be published, and how much held back.”

If one branch of the government funds such dangerous work (the NIH), how do other branches (National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity) react so stunningly when the scientists want to release this information and act dumbfounded that such work was carried out with so little security? This isn’t a common cold or case of Gonorrhea that we’re talking about here. This is a virus that has the potential to kill tens of millions, if not more.

Now many might wonder why this work was commissioned in the first place and even more so, why would they want to release this information? Dr. Fouchier states that this work will help develop vaccines. Vaccines however, are developed for certain viruses. If a bio engineered virus never existed, why would a vaccine for that virus be needed?

This has happened before, despite the fact that you don’t hear about it in the main stream media. Baxter Pharmaceuticals of Illinois released the deadly H5N1 virus in flu vaccines destined for 18 different countries (4). Czech scientists discovered the problem when they pre-tested the vaccine lots on ferrets prior to dispensing the drug to its citizens. Ferrets are used to test flu vaccines and viruses because they have similar immune responses to humans. The ferrets all died and when the vaccine was tested, it was discovered that the vaccines contained the H5N1 avian flu virus.

When introduced with the flu virus that is contagious to humans, there was a very distinct probability that the avian virus could have easily mutated and become more infectious to humans. Dr. Fouchier stated: “”We have discovered that this is indeed possible, and more easily than previously thought. In the laboratory, it was possible to change H5N1 into an aerosol-transmissible virus that can easily be spread through the air; this process could also take place in a natural setting.” (5)

Baxter suggested that this had been an “accident”. How an avian flu virus gets accidently mixed into a flu vaccine destined for the public in a BSL3 (Biosafety Level 3) lab is beyond comprehension. They shouldn’t even have been in the same room. One is a potential deadly bioweapon and the other is a supposedly therapeutic weapon against the flu virus. One must consider, is this new bioengineered avian flu virus simply another means to the same end?

The Oklahoma City bombing and 9-11 were blamed on terrorists but had the desired effect on the American People (i.e passage of the Anti-Terrorism Act and going to war respectively). If this deadly virus were to become a pandemic, it would be blamed on terrorists who took advantage of the poor security and the poor ethics of a small number of scientists. Meanwhile, few people will know about the government funding of such a foolhardy and dangerous experiment. Terrorists will be targeted, undoubtedly in some third world nation with some natural resource or drug desired by the elites of this world.

There is little doubt that the elites are getting very nervous. More and more people are becoming aware of their agenda. Will a staged war be enough to silence the populace this time? Or will it take something far smaller than a bomb or some other weapon of mass destruction to stop the educated masses from winning this war for our very freedom?
